Cupcakes

August 12, 2014

You know how you get fixated on something? That’s me today. I feel like if I don’t have a cupcake I might just give up on life. That is all. 10 mins in photoshop brought you this gem.

Bad Hair Day

Bad hair days under the seas. Clam shell compact. Some Monday’s just never feel right.

Poor Fish Biscuits

August 8, 2014

Why mermaids? Once I saw a fat mermaid on a guys arm. I liked it. I’ve been drawing chubby mermaids since. It became a thing, now it’s a blog. Actually I’m not even entirely that excited about the concept of mermaids, but it IS an excuse to make me draw and update regularly. Tiiiiime to start a comic I think.

It’s going to be called Poor Fish Biscuits. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Mirror mirror

This is loosely based on my oldest niece Alisa.

I truly love to draw and find it’s typical of my drawings that they don’t translate well to paintings- or maybe they would but I sort of like the linework. Linework is never that fun in a painting it seems. I do a lot better when I “paint” with the lasso tool. I think what works about that method is that A. you don’t have lines and B. it forces a person to work with big shapes which is the best way to paint.

Scribbles

August 6, 2014

Quick quick quick, and weird. I just scribbled through this for a different style. She kind of looks like this girl Laura I know, so that’s awkward. I wonder if she’ll recognize herself.

Anyway, moon jellyfish are a pretty neat sea creature so I featured some. Did you know there is a species of Jellyfish nicknamed the Immortal Jellyfish? It lives in the Mediterranean sea and off the coast of Japan.  The reason it is thusly name is that the Turritopsis dohrnii will, in times of crisis, illness or old age, revert back to a polyp (science speak for babeh jellyfish). It is the only know creature on earth that can do this neato hat trick. It can vacillate between adult and baby forever. Unless it gets eaten, there’s no coming back from that.

Here’s more information on the little guy if you’re interested! Sort of makes me wish I remembered the Immortal Jellyfish before I started this, they’re way cooler than Moon Jellies… but they’re also TINY.

A lesson & a Mermaid

Value  is much more important than color. If your values aren’t correct then your colors will be a mess. I often make a hue/saturation layer on top of whatever I am working on. I use it as a guide by turning it on and off during the duration of a painting, especially in a really saturated and chromatic painting such as this one. Checking the value can keep you on target for an interesting piece of art.

I started this little painting by keeping to a limited palette, of course if you have lava in your painting it means you’re not going to be doing a whole lot besides a limited palette! I went through a series of color shifts to see if my color were the most interesting for the composition. As you can see, other colors will work as well, but I like the orange violet the best.

I also thought maybe line work fish would look cool, but it make the composition way to busy in my opinion.

Suck it in!

August 5, 2014

I may or may not ALSO do this as a women. We all want to look our best, yes?

Super fast drawing of the day. I so desperately want to get better at this drawing thing. There are some things I am great at, like designing props or vehicles or isometric views of a ride path, but yet don’t show the same level of skill for expressive drawings. I also function as an artistic chameleon, able to mimic many other styles to fit a project. I sort of feel like I don’t have my own expression. Maybe that’s okay!  I see SO many amazing artists on tumblr, twitter and Instagram, I feel like I need to up my game so I am not embarrassed to post a drawing!

Sailor Mermaid

August 1, 2014

Sailor Mermaid? Moonmaid? Sometimes you just need to do some fan art. I didn’t want to copy the style of sailor moon so I made it my own, and obviously a mermaid. If you’re a fan of Sailor moon enjoy!
